This is so spot on. After reading this for the second time I realized that's why I can get more done around the house while I'm watching game shows: it keeps me from being bored so I stick with whatever I'm doing!

I’ve finally stopped listening to books or podcasts when I walk — it’s taken a lot of work to finally be able to walk without having to entertain myself.

Thanks for this thoughtful post, Kate! I, too, find myself looking out the window or spacing out while writing. Usually, I’m refreshed and more focused when I go back to work. I think many of us need breaks while working. Your piece really speaks to that.

Thanks Marilyn. I always have to work against the bad habit of resisting stillness.

Thanks so much Elizabeth! It really is so hard to keep from reaching for the phone.

I really loved this; it's a great reminder. Something about creative writing really is different than nonfiction! It requires more thought & that can be so hard.

I definitely benefit from walking / running as a great way to sort through problems.

I also have started trying to have some of my driving time be distraction-free, as that's another great time to think. But damn, it's hard with phones around! Anyways, loved the post. :)
